Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is an integrated, public health approach to the delivery of early intervention and treatment services for persons with substance use disorders and those at risk of developing these disorders.

Please review the following objectives and articulate your understanding of each:

• describe the background and rationale for conducting SBIRT with patients in primary care settings;
• utilize the AUDIT or AUDIT-C to screen and identify patients engaged in moderate or high-risk alcohol consumption; and
• demonstrate, through role-play and group discussion, the effective use of brief intervention strategies and techniques to motivate patients to change their at-risk substance use behavior and/or seek treatment.
